Focus on Life Week 8: Monochromatic

First, the disclaimer. I did not take this photo. It is by a dear friend and better photographer than I will ever be. We proudly display some of Dave's terrific wildlife photos in our home and this one was sent to us a year or two ago after he and his wife moved to their new home. I did just a little doctoring on Picasa to give Mr. Owl a proper spotlight. I know Dave peeks at the blog from time to time and sure hope he doesn't mind my sharing this terrific photo with you!

Now, move on over to Sally's blog to see what the other contributors have posted this week!

Focus on Life Week 7: Beauty of Flowers

The cactus flower is our version of the rose, with wild spikes standing in for the thorns of the more genteel rose. We are entering that wondrous time of year when all variety of cactus flowers start to emerge, proving that beauty can occur in the most surprising of places.

Focus On Life Week 6: Feel the Love

OK, I promise that this will be my only cat picture in our 52-week program but what better time to Feel The Love than to share the story of my two tuxedo kitties who look so alike you think they are related. We rescued them from two different shelters, almost three years apart. But from the moment we introduced them, they became buddies. Their favorite location is the bed in the guest bedroom aka the Bead Room where they snooze and keep me company.

Please do visit the posts of the rest of our photo-happy group!

And now for some beading!

I've been so busy blogging about my Focus on Life that I haven't focused on beading. Below is one of my recent projects, a bracelet pattern I was instantly smitten with when I saw it in the Beadwork 2012 issue. The pattern is by Leslie Frazier, designer of the year, and you can tell why! The bracelet is constructed entirely with 4x2MM peanut beads and is really fun to build.

Focus On Life Week 5: Capture Our Hearts

Each week when Sally has provided our theme, something has immediately popped into my head. This week, the heart image took me directly to one of my favorite artists, Frida Kahlo, whose popularity is even more pronounced in the Southwest where her image adorns the most unusual objects -- like this chair which I purchased for our guest room. I don't think all of our guests share my Frida fondness because I have found the chair covered with a towel on occasion. I guess it could be a little creepy to wake up with Frida watching you!

So what is the Frida connection to Capture our Hearts? Perhaps her most famous painting is The Two Fridas, which she painted in 1939. I was concerned about copyright and thought the screen shot below from the PBS web site would be ok. Among other themes, The Two Fridas depicts Frida's struggle between her proper, cultured self (in white) and her more primitive self, who is in love with Diego Rivera whose image she holds, with both Fridas bonded together by a shared artery.

PBS: The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo

I so love this painting, that I featured it in a series of Frida pendants last year with the one below showing Proper Frida.
I hope you have time to visit the other amazing contributors to Focus On Life Week 5!
